Get to Know Your Garden

First, you need to get to know your garden. You need to know which areas get the most and least sunlight and at what times during the day, what kind of soil you have and what your aspect is (north-facing, south-facing etc).

Plan the Garden

Now that you know your backyard, you can begin to make a plan for what you want it to look like. You can create a floorplan for the space, which should include what you want to plant and where and any other decorative or practical plans that you have. When making your plan, try to think about colour and structure to create a professional-looking space.

Gather Tools, Equipment & Plants

Now, you will want to get started and get your hands dirty. There are a few plants that are easier to grow than others and these can be a good starting point for a new gardener. This includes plants such as geranium, primula, lavender and cranesbill amongst others.

In terms of tools, you will want a few key items including a strimmer, shovel, trowel, secateurs, hand fork and spade. It is important to invest in quality so that the tools will last and Milwaukee tools are great for gardening and they have everything you need to get started.

Start Planting

You will need to weed and prepare the soil before planting and add mulch or fertilizer if needed. You can find advice online for how to plant specific plants as this can vary depending on what you have. It is a good idea to break the garden into sections when you get started so that you can focus on one part at a time and avoid taking on too much.

Maintain & Be Patient

It is then a case of maintaining your garden. This might include feeding and watering the plants, trimming, mowing the lawn and generally keeping the space neat and tidy. Crucially, make sure that you exercise patience as it can take a long time for plants to grow and get the garden how you envisage it but it is incredibly rewarding once you reach this stage.

Hopefully, this beginners guide to gardening will help you to get started with gardening and enjoy the many benefits that this hobby can bring to your life while improving your living space.
