When thinking about luxury dining rooms, we often imagine big, open spaces with a grand table and ceilings tall enough for a huge chandelier. However, if you have a small room, it doesn’t automatically mean it can’t feel high-end! It’s all about knowing how and where to add the right touches.

Let the furniture do the talking
In a small space, every piece of furniture must earn its place, so think carefully about your choices. The table and chairs are, of course, the stars of the show and a high-quality set will go a long way in making the entire space feel more luxurious.
For instance, a natural oak wood or a marble table are both stylish options, depending on your interior style. In small rooms, it’s best to go for round or oval shaped tables, as the harsh corners of a square can make it feel more cramped. Pair it with some elegant seating, such as the custom dining chairs from Table du Sud, all made from premium materials and available in a range of designs and colours. It’s a good idea to go for chairs with tapered legs and lower or open backs, as that helps the room feel more airy too.
Play with lighting to create drama
Every interior designer will tell you that lighting is one of the most powerful tools for bringing the space into the next level. In a small dining room, a statement pendant hung low above the table will draw the eye downward and inward, creating a sense of intimacy.
Then, layer your main pendant with other light sources, like a decorative wall fixture or two, perhaps a beautiful standing lamp and some candles. Try to avoid using overly harsh, white lights, as they make spaces look immediately flat. Instead, opt for warm-toned lightbulbs that cast a flattering, cosy glow.
Use finishing touches thoughtfully
Nothing makes a room feel smaller than clutter. So, any finishing touches you make need to be thoughtful and intentional. For example, keep the table fairly clear when not in use – perhaps have a single centrepiece, like a vase with flowers or a cluster of candles at varying heights, but avoid filling it with too many decorative elements. When you do dress the table for special occasions or dinner parties, use matching tableware and quality linen napkins that work nicely with your overall colour scheme.
The rest of the decor matters too. The colour of your walls, for one, can change the atmosphere dramatically (a deep navy or forest green accent wall are luxurious choices, but a simple off-white is always classic). Mirrors can be cleverly positioned around the room to reflect the light and create the appearance of a larger space. Any other decor touches, such as curtains, paintings, rugs or cushions, can also be used to add texture and visual interest.
It’s all about making smart choices
Small spaces do have certain constraints but there are clever ways to work around them, whether through furniture choices or lighting. And, with a few intentional styling touches, you’ll have yourself a showstopping dining room!
