While there are definitely more luxury resorts to indulge in, sometimes all it takes is a little more thought about your destination as there are so many breathtakingly beautiful places you can visit that have the sights and sounds of places such as the Maldives but without the heft price tag. Accommodation over here is cheap and you can get a lot for your money. It proves that if you want cheap holidays you don’t need to go to a tacky resort in an island overrun with British tourists.

Take the ferry from mainland Tanzania for just $35 or catch a flight for less than $100. It is a destination reminiscent of Mauritius, with white powdery sand beaches, clear blue waters and palm trees. Sleep in over the water luxury beach huts, dine on the beach front and spend your days soaking up the sun, wind surfing or exploring the luscious landscape. You can opt for luxury hotels or for something cheaper, try an Air bnb where rooms average at £53 (You can find places at £20 a night right on the beach front.) It’s a location that looks like it should cost a lot more than it does, and is worth exploring which it remains relatively undiscovered.

Galle – Sri Lanka

There are so many reasons to visit here that there’s isn’t nearly enough room to list them all. A small island off the coast of India it offers a pared back version of some of the main Indian cities and is a hub of thriving culture. During your stay you can dive with blue whales, go and see wild elephants ambling around, journey through caves, discover new foodie delights and relax on the white sandy shores. Be sure to visit Galle Fort, take a boat trip out to look for dolphins and don’t forget to bring a camera for some of the most beautiful sunsets you’ll ever see.

The Cook Islands
