The Dorsett Shepherds Bush is the newest addition to the fast-developing district and SpaMika is its Star
It’s easy to walk straight past the Dorsett Shepherds Bush. Its discreet facade, set among iconic buildings like The Empire and the now shuttered old Walkabout gives hotel guests plenty of privacy. But step inside, and you’re immediately reminded of its history as an art deco picture theatre, back in the days when its was part of the Shepherds Bush Pavilion.
The interiors ooze old Hollywood glamour. Shimmering over-sized portraits of Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe beckon you in. Even the balconies on every floor, plainly visible from the hotel’s vast atrium, are reminiscent of old show reels.
By contrast SpaMika, the hotel’s wellness sanctuary, is a picture of modernity, with crisp wet spa facilities and huge glass panes that give way to sprawling views across West London.
I was invited to try the Dorsett’s Spa Taster and Afternoon Tea package, where guests can enjoy access to the sauna and steam room for a relaxing hour before indulging in a 25-minute treatment followed by a sumptuous afternoon tea.
The signature treatment on offer is an Elemis facial, which promotes healthy cell renewal, circulation and firmness, among other benefits. However I went for a invigorating massage and was impressed by the expertise of the masseuse, who took great care to work out several knots in my shoulders, with just the right amount of pressure.
Between snoozing in the Sauna and surrendering to the supple hands of my masseuse, I took a few moments to take some refreshments in the spa’s luxurious viewpoint lounge, burying myself in the plush towelled robe and slippers provided.
Following the treatment, I flew down lift to the Atrium Jin Bar, where afternoon tea was being served. In contrast to the usual afternoon teas on offer, the array of delicacies served at the Dorsett is a delight to the eyes, with innovative treats like rainbow sandwiches that used multicoloured breads flavoured with coconut or beetroot.
Red velvet cupcakes with edible floral garnishes and tart berry palate cleansers balance out the indulgent chocolate truffles and brownie bites. The afternoon tea menu also offers and unlimited array of exclusive loose leaf teas. Our waiter was an excellent host, who kindly explained everything on offer and was prompt to offer assistance.
I left feeling fully satisfied and truly pampered by the experience. It was a great way to spend a relaxing afternoon without even having to leave the city.
The Spa taster and Afternoon Tea package costs £84 per person and includes a 25-min treatment, an hour’s access to spa facilities and a classic afternoon tea.
