The Questions You Should Always Ask Before Any Cosmetic Procedure

Cosmetic procedures are much more accessible now than they were even a few years ago. And with that increase in accessibility comes a much wider range of clinics, practitioners and price points to navigate.

With so many choices how do you find the right provider for you so you get the results and the experience you want and expect?

Let’s take a look at a few questions you should ask before any cosmetic procedure.

Is the Surgeon Qualified and Accredited?

This is  a non-negotiable starting point. Any practitioner offering cosmetic surgery should be on the GMC specialist register for plastic surgery and the clinic itself should be registered with the care quality commission. They’re not just bureaucratic formalities, they are the minimum standard that indicate you’re in safe hands.

You should also look into how much experience the surgeon has specifically in the procedure you’re considering. A broad cosmetic background is not the same as a specialist. If you’re looking into intimate surgery for example, then seeking out a dedicated intimate surgery specialist with a focused practice in that area gives you a very different level of expertise than a generalist clinic offering it as one of many options.

What Does the Consultation Process Look Like?

A reputable clinic will never rush you into a decision. The process should give you plenty of time to ask questions, understand your options and be honest about your motivation and expectations. If a clinic is pushing for a quick booking or discouraging you from taking time to think it over that is a red flag.

You should also feel comfortable being honest in the consultation. A good surgeon will tell you if a procedure isn’t right for you or if your expectations aren’t realistic. That’s someone who has your best interests at heart, not just their business interests.

What Are Realistic Risks and Recovery Times?

Every single surgical procedure comes with risks and any practitioner who downplays these risks should be approached with caution. Before you do anything you need a clear picture of what the potential implications are, how likely they are to occur and what would happen if something went wrong.

The recovery time and process is important too. You should enquire as to how much time you’ll need off work if there are any activities you need to avoid and for how long as well as what the healing process actually looks like week by week. Getting honest answers here can help you plan post procedure life properly and avoid any unwelcome surprises.

What Results Can You Expect?

Before-and-after photos can be helpful, but they don’t always tell you the whole story. Ask your surgeon to talk you through what outcomes are realistic for your specific anatomy and circumstances rather than relying on idealised examples.

Don’t forget to ask about the longevity of results, too. Are they expected to be permanent? Or are there factors that will affect this over time? The more you can uncover about what life post-treatment is going to look like, the more you can assess if you’re happy to go ahead or not.
