If you have a balcony but are yet to unlock its full potential, now is your chance. Here are our top tips to transform a small balcony to a stunning space…
If you’re lucky enough to have a balcony in your home, yet aren’t quite sure how to style it, it’s time to turn that around. Many see a balcony as an afterthought, plonk a couple of chairs on it and consider it a done job. Yet there is so much potential to be unlocked! We spoke to Wayfair’s Resident Style Advisor Nadia McCowan Hill on her top tips to transform a small balcony to a stunning space…
In the Detail
During the Summer, I turn to decorations that conjure up a relaxed boho look without much effort, for example wall hangings and outdoor rugs in all colours and shapes. Try layering rugs in different patterns and colours to create a striking look and add depth to a balcony limited with limited square footage. Don’t forget to take advantage of vertical space. A decorative wooden ladder offers a spot for hanging succulents, small lanterns or woollen blankets for cooler evenings. While ceiling-mounted hanging chairs leave the floor free and convey a feeling of lightness.
Plants Aplenty
Next on the list of top tips to transform a small balcony is plants. Colourful, sweeping or delicate – there are many plants for every balcony. When making your choice, make sure to consider whether your green roommates need sun, shade or a mix. If you want a mediterranean look, use plants such as lavender and eucalyptus. These are not only evergreen, but also have an enchanting scent. For those who want a practical green oasis, herbs are the perfect pick. Thyme, sage, mint, basil…the choice is huge. They look fab and smell wonderful and are ideal for adding something extra to lockdown meals.
Fabulous furnishings
A small lounge corner is essential for a staycation feeling at home and is an effortless choice in this list of top tips to transform a small balcony. Choose a lounge set in light cream shades and complement it with colourful, textured cushions and blankets, to give that Ibizan flavour. Poufs and stools in all shapes and colours are perfect for a small balcony and have a relaxed feel.
Material Mix
When it comes to materials “Mix & Match” is the motto. Wood, rattan and cotton combine beautifully to give a textured look. For a modern touch, team with accessories made of metal, glass and colourful ceramics. Fringes and tassels add a boho vibe, whether you want an arabian nights or chic island look.
Light Up Your Life
You want to make the most of the time on your gorgeous new balcony space – thankfully you don’t need much to capture the light and create the right ambience. Lanterns, votives and fairy lights can be artistically draped around a railing or scattered on an accent table, bathing your open-air oasis in an atmospheric, dreamlike light
